I clearly remember Emily, when about the same age, saying something that sort of sounded like she thought you got fish from fish like you get milk from cows, or eggs from chicken. She loved fish and I didn’t wanna wreck that, but I thought she should know, so I carefully explained that one caught the fish and killed it, and that it was the dead fish we were eating. “Oh, I know” she told us. “It’s kinda mean, but they sure are tasty!”

And wouldn’t that make a great new slogan for, say, the beef industry? Way better than “It’s what’s for dinner.”

I agree. It is way better to let kids know the truth of the matter rather than letting them grow up with mixed views. We all have a right to make our own choices about what we want to eat and there’s no reason for any of the things that influence our choices to be traumatic realizations. I have fished and cleaned fish with Mabel before. Unfortunately between catching and cleaning the fish we went to the emergency room because Mabel fell back on her head passed out and had a bloody nose. Everything turned out to be fine and she doesn’t even remember it. Why am I mentioning it? I guess I’ve started to ramble on. I will leave you with this. Mabel and I love meat. We also love vegetables. And sweets. We also love cheese, but don’t eat much of it, and finally….we watch a little more T.V. than we probably should. Maybe we’ll watch less, maybe we won’t.

It was really nice to see you guys the other day.
